Description: This “superb history” of artificial light traces the evolution of society—“invariably fascinating and often original . . . [it] amply lives up to its title” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). In Brilliant, Jane Brox explores humankind’s ever-changing relationship to artificial light, from the stone lamps of the Pleistocene to the LEDs embedded in fabrics of the future. More than a survey of technological development, this sweeping history reveals how artificial light changed our world, and how those social and cultural changes in turn led to the pursuit of more ways of spreading, maintaining, and controlling light. Brox plumbs the class implications of light—who had it, who didn’t—through the centuries when crude lamps and tallow candles constricted waking hours. She identifies the pursuit of whale oil as the first time the need for light thrust us toward an environmental tipping point. Only decades later, gas street lights opened up the evening hours to leisure, which changed the ways we live and sleep and the world’s ecosystems. Edison’s bulbs produced a light that seemed to its users all but divorced from human effort or cost. And yet, as Brox’s informative portrait of our current grid system shows, the cost is ever with us. Brilliant is infused with human voices, startling insights, and timely questions about how our future lives will be shaped by light

Description: *National Bestseller* "This is a funny and beautiful book. What a little bastard." --Russell Brand "Every paragraph is like doing a shot with a friend. A double." --Caitlin Moran Joel Golby's writing for Vice and The Guardian, with its wry observation and naked self-reflection, has brought him a wide and devoted following. Now, in his first book, he presents a blistering collection of new and newly expanded essays--including the achingly funny viral hit "Things You Only Know When Both Your Parents Are Dead." In these pages, he travels to Saudi Arabia, where he acts as a perplexed bystander at a camel pageant; offers a survival guide for the modern dinner party (i.e. how to tactfully escape at the first sign of an adult board game); and gets pitted head-to-head, again and again, with an unpredictable, unpitying subspecies of Londoner: the landlord. Through it all, he shows that no matter how cruel the misfortune, how absurd the circumstance, there's always the soft punch of a lesson tucked within. This is a book for anyone who overshares, overthinks, has ever felt lost or confused--and who wants to have a good laugh about it.

Description: ‘She shivered, though the kitchen was warm. Icicles of foreboding trickled down her spine. With trembling hands she whipped back her hair at the nape of her neck. As she turned away from the window, she missed the shadow passing by.’ One dark winter’s morning, bride-to-be Cara Dunne is found hanging in her home, dressed in her wedding dress, with a lock of hair removed. Detective Lottie Parker is first on the scene. Looking at Cara’s bruised and battered body, she wonders who could have hated her enough to kill her at the happiest time of her life. The case takes a darker turn that afternoon with another shocking discovery – the broken body of a second young woman, pushed from the roof of the hospital where she worked. Fiona Heffernan was also due to be married, and her body is clad in a wedding dress, a lock of her hair cut off. The killings seem so personal that Lottie is convinced the girls have been killed by someone they knew. When she goes to break the news to Fiona’s family, she’s on the alert for anything suspicious. But then she makes a discovery that causes her blood to run cold – Fiona’s eight-year-old daughter Lily didn’t return home from her dance recital that afternoon. Terrified that Lily will be the next victim of a twisted and dangerous individual, Lottie takes the case into her own hands, risking her life when she comes face-to-face with the killer… If you love Karin Slaughter, Robert Dugoni and Rachel Caine, you’ll be hooked by this heart-stopping thriller from Patricia Gibney. The Third Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron of the Third Cavalry Group came up the road to the camp at around 10AM on that fateful Sunday; at 2:45PM, the Third Platoon of F Company opened the gates. Description: A narcotics task force police officers risk-taking heroics to keep the public safe can take the very thing away from that person that they are trying to protect, which is life. Tom Maxwell is a man who comes from a background that almost inevitably led him down the path of trying to preserve life. He was forced to witness the terrors of substance abuse and the outcomes of the darkness that shrouds it, which was death. The son of a science teacher could not escape the questions that drive and inspire scientists. He had heard the word hypothesis more times than any classmate at a dinner table, that much he could guarantee. But the most intriguing hypothesis of all time to the greatest of scientists will always be the imagined solutions or possibilities to the questions that mankind cannot answer. What happens to us after we die? Is there such thing as a soul? Is there a religion that is right? Why is space too large for us to reach the ends of it? Are any of our archeological finds and understanding of mankinds history truly accurate? The answers to these unknowns are the top-shelf beverages, the high-end cigars, and the top-performing engines of the most sophisticated minds in any of our cultures throughout history. They are the crme de la crme of placing your mark in history. If a scientist was to ever accurately propose or discover the answers to any of these questions, well, he or she would have done the impossible. They would have achieved the goal that perhaps has led us to where we are today. If we were able to answer the unanswerable, then what would become of motivation, belief, faith, and imagination? Maybe the beauty of the unanswerable questions of mankind is that they are that way by design. Not being able to answer certain questions makes us motivated, keeps us dreaming, and enables us to have passion. As in any puzzle that we try to solve, love always complicates the pathways that we choose, and Tom Maxwell finds himself in a bind. Fighting the same fight of his past, when his love chooses an addiction too familiar to his adolescent life, leaves him damaged. He finds himself living a life where his decisions and actions depict who he will become. A hero is only a hero when his actions and timing are aligned with a heroic outcome. A dead man with the wrong timing is not branded with the champion insignia the way that a dead man with the right timing is labeled a hero. Tom faces a world filled with the need to master and understand timing. He will need to learn why our existence needs balance and how we grow at a pace spaced out over time, by design. Life will throw him into a cyclone of sink-or-swim type of learning, which will force him to protect the fate of mankinds future. He will be challenged to learn a new way of life and protect the intention of lifes very design, the way that God had intended for mankind as mankind attempts to redesign their destiny. He is forced to learn the past of a scientist and will struggle with control issues regarding fate. Love will complicate him, birth will give him greater purpose, understanding other peoples perspectives based on their histories will challenge him on being able to pursue their demise, because life is never black and white. It is always complicated, and people are the way they are because of what theyve been through. A hero sometimes becomes legend because over time they ceased to exist.

Description: Introduces readers to the history of books in Britain—their significance, influence, and current and future status Presented as a comprehensive, up-to-date narrative, The Book in Britain: A Historical Introduction explores the impact of books, manuscripts, and other kinds of material texts on the cultures and societies of the British Isles. The text clearly explains the technicalities of printing and publishing and discusses the formal elements of books and manuscripts, which are necessary to facilitate an understanding of that impact. This collaboratively authored narrative history combines the knowledge and expertise of five scholars who seek to answer questions such as: How does the material form of a text affect its meaning? How do books shape political and religious movements? How have the economics of the book trade and copyright shaped the literary canon? Who has been included in and excluded from the world of books, and why? The Book in Britain: A Historical Introduction will appeal to all scholars, students, and historians interested in the written word and its continued production and presentation.

But when they realise the main suspect is innocent, they have no choice but to get involved. Tom navigates a new friendship while he tries to prove that the police have the wrong man. Instead, he uncovers a plot too twisted to ignore. Who was the killer? Who was the victim? And which of the village’s crazy residents are involved? Will Tom convince the town of the truth before he is killed? The Let's Catch series harks back to the classics like The Famous Five (Enid Blyton), The Hardy Boys (Franklin W.
