Description: A brave mouse, a covetous rat, a wishful serving girl, and a princess named Pea come together in Kate DiCamillo's Newbery Medal–winning tale. Welcome to the story of Despereaux Tilling, a mouse who is in love with music, stories, and a princess named Pea. It is also the story of a rat called Roscuro, who lives in the darkness and covets a world filled with light. And it is the story of Miggery Sow, a slow-witted serving girl who harbors a simple, impossible wish. These three characters are about to embark on a journey that will lead them down into a horrible dungeon, up into a glittering castle, and, ultimately, into each other's lives. What happens then? As Kate DiCamillo would say: Reader, it is your destiny to find out. With black-and-white illustrations and a refreshed cover by Timothy Basil Ering.

Description: A program for parents and professionals on how to raise kids who love to read, featuring interviews with childhood development experts, advice from librarians, tips from authors and children’s book publishers, and reading recommendations for kids from birth up to age five. Every parent wants to give his or her child a competitive advantage. In Born Reading, publishing insider (and new dad) Jason Boog explains how that can be as simple as opening a book. Studies have shown that interactive reading—a method that creates dialogue as you read together—can raise a child’s IQ by more than six points. In fact, interactive reading can have just as much of a determining factor on a child’s IQ as vitamins and a healthy diet. But there’s no book that takes the cutting-edge research on interactive reading and shows parents, teachers, and librarians how to apply it to their day-to-day lives with kids, until now. Born Reading provides step-by-step instructions on interactive reading and advice for developing your child’s interest in books from the time they are born. Boog has done the research, talked with the leading experts in child development, and worked with them to compile the “Born Reading Essential Books” lists, offering specific titles tailored to the interests and passions of kids from birth to age five. But reading can take many forms—print books as well as ebooks and apps—and Born Reading also includes tips on how to use technology the right way to help (not hinder) your child’s intellectual development. Parents will find advice on which educational apps best supplement their child’s development, when to start introducing digital reading to their child, and how to use tech to help create the readers of tomorrow. Born Reading will show anyone who loves kids how to make sure the children they care about are building a powerful foundation in literacy from the beginning of life.

Description: This collection features all five New York Times bestselling Penderwicks adventures by National Book Award-winning author Jeanne Birdsall! Follow the Penderwicks' adventures, from a bunny-raising hobby to a dog-walking business, from summer breaks to school days, from unforgettable hijinks to chaotic misadventures--and always, with sisterhood through and through--in this exciting collection: The Penderwicks: This summer the Penderwick sisters discover the magic of a beautiful estate called Arundel. But the best discovery of all is Jeffrey Tifton, son of Arundel's owner, who becomes the perfect companion for their adventures. The Penderwicks on Gardam Street: When Mr. Penderwick's sister decides it's time for him to start dating, the girls come up with the Save-Daddy Plan--a plot so brilliant, so bold, so funny, that only the Penderwick girls could have come up with it. The Penderwicks at Point Mouette: When summer comes around, it's off to the beach for Rosalind . . . and off to Maine for the rest of the Penderwick girls and their old friend, Jeffrey. That leaves Skye as the oldest available Penderwick--a terrifying notion for all, but for Skye especially. The Penderwicks in Spring: Batty is saving up her dog-walking money for an extra-special surprise for her family, which she plans to present on her upcoming birthday. But when some unwelcome surprises make themselves known, the best-laid plans fall apart. The Penderwicks at Last: The Penderwicks return to Arundel this summer, the place where it all began. And better still is the occasion: a good old-fashioned, homemade-by-Penderwicks wedding.

Description: "Vividly documenting school fund-raisers, contentious school board meetings, school drop offs, and back-to-school nights, Martin challenges preconceptions about American education and race relations today. Readers will be inspired and enlightened." —Publisher's Weekly “Provocative and personally searching” —San Francisco Chronicle A Shelf Awareness Best Books of 2021 One mother’s story of enrolling her daughter in a local public school, and the surprising, necessary lessons she learned with her neighbors. From the time Courtney E. Martin strapped her daughter, Maya, to her chest for long walks, she was curious about Emerson Elementary, a public school down the street from her Oakland home. She learned that White families in their gentrifying neighborhood largely avoided the majority-Black, poorly-rated school. As she began asking why, a journey of a thousand moral miles began. Learning in Public is the story, not just Courtney’s journey, but a whole country’s. Many of us are newly awakened to the continuing racial injustice all around us, but unsure of how to go beyond hashtags and yard signs to be a part of transforming the country. Courtney discovers that her public school, the foundation of our fragile democracy, is a powerful place to dig deeper. Courtney E. Martin examines her own fears, assumptions, and conversations with other moms and dads as they navigate school choice. A vivid portrait of integration’s virtues and complexities, and yes, the palpable joy of trying to live differently in a country re-making itself. Learning in Public might also set your family’s life on a different course forever.

Description: Anthology containing: The India They Saw (Vol-1) by Sandhya Jain The India They Saw (Vol-2) by Meenakshi Jain The India They Saw (Vol-3) by Meenakshi Jain The India They Saw (Vol-4) by Meenakshi Jain The arrival of Vasco da Gama on the western coast of India; near Calicut; on 27 May 1498; heralded the restoration of Europe’s links with the subcontinent after an interval of almost eight centuries. With his landing; India became accessible to Portuguese conquistadors; traders; travellers; scholars and clergymen. The sixteenth century could; in a sense; be termed the Portuguese century; for no European power could challenge its mastery of the sea route to India. The defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 by Holland and England; however; signaled the end of this monopoly and in 1595; the first Dutch fleet entered the Indian Ocean. In the seventeenth century; the Dutch; with their British camp followers; seriously undermined the Portuguese. The French also entered the Indian trade in the second half of this century. While several Portuguese accounts of India in the sixteenth century are available; for the seventeenth century; we also have the writings of travellers; scholars and missionaries from the latter three countries. Additionally; Jesuits of various nationalities wrote regular letters to home; providing valuable information on facets of Indian life; albeit tempered by their religious bias. This volume confines itself to European writings of sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It does not claim to be exhaustive but presents glimpses of the Indian reality as recorded by contemporary European visitors. Only English translations have been used. A sizeable number of accounts in European languages still await translation.

Description: In the late 1950s, Ted Geisel took on the challenge of creating a book using only 250 unique first-grade words, something that aspiring readers would have both the ability and the desire to read. The result was an unlikely children’s classic, The Cat in the Hat. But Geisel didn’t stop there. Using The Cat in the Hat as a template, he teamed with Helen Geisel and Phyllis Cerf to create Beginner Books, a whole new category of readers that combined research-based literacy practices with the logical insanity of Dr. Seuss. The books were an enormous success, giving the world such authors and illustrators as P. D. Eastman, Roy McKie, and Stan and Jan Berenstain, and beloved bestsellers such as Are You My Mother?; Go, Dog. Go!; Put Me in the Zoo; and Green Eggs and Ham. The story of Beginner Books—and Ted Geisel’s role as “president, policymaker, and editor” of the line for thirty years—has been told briefly in various biographies of Dr. Seuss, but I Can Read It All by Myself: The Beginner Books Story presents it in full detail for the first time. Drawn from archival research and dozens of brand-new interviews, I Can Read It All by Myself explores the origins, philosophies, and operations of Beginner Books from The Cat in the Hat in 1957 to 2019’s A Skunk in My Bunk, and reveals the often-fascinating lives of the writers and illustrators who created them.

Description: The star of the New York Times bestselling Here Comes the Easter Cat is back with a loose tooth—and a little competition! When Cat loses a tooth, the Tooth Fairy delivers a wholly unwanted sidekick: a mouse. Together, Cat and Mouse are tasked with running a few Tooth Fairy-related errands—a challenge, since Mouse is just as competitive and mischievous and hilariously self-involved as Cat. SHOULD BE READ BY ANYONE WHO LOVES BOOKS' EVENING STANDARD Absence doesn't make the heart grow fonder. It makes people think you're dead. So begins Christopher Fowler's foray into the back catalogues and backstories of 99 authors who, once hugely popular, have all but disappeared from our shelves. Whether male or female, domestic or international, flash-in-the-pan or prolific, mega-seller or prize-winner - no author, it seems, can ever be fully immune from the fate of being forgotten. And Fowler, as well as remembering their careers, lifts the lid on their lives, and why they often stopped writing or disappeared from the public eye. These 99 journeys are punctuated by 12 short essays about faded once-favourites: including the now-vanished novels Walt Disney brought to the screen, the contemporary rivals of Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie who did not stand the test of time, and the women who introduced us to psychological suspense many decades before it conquered the world. This is a book about books and their authors. It is for book lovers, and is written by one who could not be a more enthusiastic, enlightening and entertaining guide. Four complete books for one low price! Characters you can relate to.

♥Welcome the Peterson sisters into your life as they find their way back to one another, overcoming challenges and finding their happily-ever-afters at the same time.♥

★Book One★

A Heart to Call Home

After an indifferent divorce, Reed Peterson traded in her high-profile career in the city for an opportunity to try her hand at running a business of her own. She’s not sure if the small town life is for her, but since part of her new mission in life is to adopt the free-spiritedness her mother had once embodied, she knows she has to give it a try. She needs her freedom, and she needs it now. Even if the fresh air might suffocate her.

Rogan Douglas agrees to take on the job of getting Reed’s property up-to-snuff so she can re-open the once grand—now dilapidated—cottage motel in town. Struggling to raise his five kids on his own after the accidental death of his wife, Rogan didn’t realize the job would cost him so much. Like his sanity. And his heart.

Reed and Rogan are venturing down different paths in life, but can they resist the powerful attraction that threatens the way they see themselves? Their futures? And is it possible for two people with such different personalities and values to find a way to call each other’s heart their home?

Book Two

Loving a Wildflower

Simplicity Peterson has never cared about fitting in, but she’s ready to put her couch-surfing days behind her. First step toward planting roots—find a way to make a difference in her new community. Volunteering to help the reclusive and notoriously difficult Ethan Witherford will help people see the good side of her. If she tries hard enough, she should be able to keep everyone in town from thinking of her as the crazy hippie. She expects to feel good about performing this important community service, but she’s far from prepared when Ethan turns out to be the most dangerous rollercoaster she’s ever had the pleasure of riding.

Ethan had been tortured enough as a POW. He doesn’t need this free-spirited nymph interfering in his quiet, uncomfortable existence. His one goal in life is to make his estranged parents miserable, and he can’t fulfill that destiny if Simplicity continues yanking him from his dark cave as she chases a world of make-believe.

His scars are external. Hers are internal. She can look past his. Can he do the same?

Book Three

Wherever You Go

The last thing Paisley Peterson needs is to fall in love. She left her high-stress job in Boston so she could heal in Healing Springs--isn't that what the town is about? She needs her sisters. She does not need a man.

Asher has always been the one to take care of the people in his life, so when sexy Paisley strolls in and takes the lead, he finds himself turned on by her independence and confidence in a way he has never been turned on before. But after suffering too many losses in life and with a plate already brimming with family members who need his care and protection, can he handle the truth behind her sudden appearance in Healing Springs? How is he supposed to allow himself to get close to her when he could lose her?

Asher and Paisley are from two different worlds with two different life plans. Will their unplanned love affair turn into a dead end? Or will it be just the detour they have both needed all along?

Book Four

Imperfect Harmony

A marriage of convenience isn’t on Harmony Peterson’s agenda when she’s forced to sneak into Healing Springs to retrieve important papers, but if marrying a stranger keeps her from reuniting with her estranged sisters, how dumb would she be to turn down the offer? She’ll do whatever it takes to keep her vow to protect the infant she hadn’t planned on raising.

Keegan O’Malley knows he’s not qualified to save anyone, but if a sham marriage can help this beautiful, intriguing stranger who forced her way into his life and maybe help him in return, why should he talk himself into reason? Though he’s failed to live up to his moral code before, he has to believe he’s somehow been given a second chance to right the wrongs.

A fake marriage may be something they can live with. But can they honor the unspoken promise to keep their hearts out of the bargain?

These stories remain as a vivid autobiographical records and colorful images of a life in the mid-nineteenth century American town. Extract: "If there was any fellow in the Boy's Town fifty years ago who had a good reason to run off it was Pony Baker. Pony was not his real name; it was what the boys called him, because there were so many fellows who had to be told apart, as Big Joe and Little Joe, and Big John and Little John, and Big Bill and Little Bill, that they got tired of telling boys apart that way; and after one of the boys called him Pony Baker, so that you could know him from his cousin Frank Baker, nobody ever called him anything else." William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author, literary critic, and playwright. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters", he was particularly known for his tenure as editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day", and the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria. His stories of Boston upper crust life set in the 1850s are highly regarded among scholars of American fiction.

Description: This is the first volume to consider the popular literary category of Early Readers – books written and designed for children who are just beginning to read independently. It argues that Early Readers deserve more scholarly attention and careful thought because they are, for many younger readers, their first opportunity to engage with a work of literature on their own, to feel a sense of mastery over a text, and to experience pleasure from the act of reading independently. Using interdisciplinary approaches that draw upon and synthesize research being done in education, child psychology, sociology, cultural studies, and children’s literature, the volume visits Early Readers from a variety of angles: as teaching tools; as cultural artifacts that shape cultural and individual subjectivity; as mass produced products sold to a niche market of parents, educators, and young children; and as aesthetic objects, works of literature and art with specific conventions. Examining the reasons such books are so popular with young readers, as well as the reasons that some adults challenge and censor them, the volume considers the ways Early Readers contribute to the construction of younger children as readers, thinkers, consumers, and as gendered, raced, classed subjects. It also addresses children’s texts that have been translated and sold around the globe, examining them as part of an increasingly transnational children’s media culture that may add to or supplant regional, ethnic, and national children’s literatures and cultures. While this collection focuses mostly on books written in English and often aimed at children living in the US, it is important to acknowledge that these Early Readers are a major US cultural export, influencing the reading habits and development of children across the globe.

Description: This carefully crafted ebook: "ULTIMATE Collection of Rudyard Kipling: His Greatest Works in One Volume" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "The Jungle Book" is a collection of stories and fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families and communities. Description: The volume examines the mutually constitutive relationship between the materiality of objects and their aesthetic meanings. Its approach connects material culture with art history, curation, technologies and practices of making. A central dimension of the case studies collected here is the mobility of objects between Europe and China and the transformations that unfold as a result of their transcultural lives. Many of the objects studied here are relatively unknown or understudied. The stories they recount suggest new ways of thinking about space, cultural geographies and the complex and often contradictory association of power and culture. These studies of transcultural objects can suggest pathways for museum experts by uncovering the multi-layered identities and temporalities of objects that can no longer be labelled as located in single regions. It is also addressed to students of art history, of European and Chinese studies and scholars of consumer culture. « This eagerly awaited volume offers deep and extensive insights into the fast-growing field of material culture studies. Its fresh approach to Eurasian objects and materialities will serve as useful reading for all scholars interested in transcultural and global studies. A very helpful introductory essay. » Sabine du Crest, University of Bordeaux Montaigne, Former Fellow, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies.
