Description: In the late 1950s, Ted Geisel took on the challenge of creating a book using only 250 unique first-grade words, something that aspiring readers would have both the ability and the desire to read. The result was an unlikely children’s classic, The Cat in the Hat. But Geisel didn’t stop there. Using The Cat in the Hat as a template, he teamed with Helen Geisel and Phyllis Cerf to create Beginner Books, a whole new category of readers that combined research-based literacy practices with the logical insanity of Dr. Seuss. The books were an enormous success, giving the world such authors and illustrators as P. D. Eastman, Roy McKie, and Stan and Jan Berenstain, and beloved bestsellers such as Are You My Mother?; Go, Dog. Go!; Put Me in the Zoo; and Green Eggs and Ham. The story of Beginner Books—and Ted Geisel’s role as “president, policymaker, and editor” of the line for thirty years—has been told briefly in various biographies of Dr. Seuss, but I Can Read It All by Myself: The Beginner Books Story presents it in full detail for the first time. Drawn from archival research and dozens of brand-new interviews, I Can Read It All by Myself explores the origins, philosophies, and operations of Beginner Books from The Cat in the Hat in 1957 to 2019’s A Skunk in My Bunk, and reveals the often-fascinating lives of the writers and illustrators who created them.

Description: “A necessary book for anyone truly interested in what we take from the sea to eat, and how, and why.” —Sam Sifton, The New York Times Book Review Acclaimed author of American Catch and The Omega Princple and life-long fisherman, Paul Greenberg takes us on a journey, examining the four fish that dominate our menus: salmon, sea bass, cod, and tuna. Investigating the forces that get fish to our dinner tables, Greenberg reveals our damaged relationship with the ocean and its inhabitants. Just three decades ago, nearly everything we ate from the sea was wild. Today, rampant overfishing and an unprecedented biotech revolution have brought us to a point where wild and farmed fish occupy equal parts of a complex marketplace. Four Fish offers a way for us to move toward a future in which healthy and sustainable seafood is the rule rather than the exception.

The author of the beloved One for the Murphys gives readers an emotionally-charged, uplifting novel that will speak to anyone who’s ever thought there was something wrong with them because they didn’t fit in. “Everybody is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.” Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions. She is afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb? However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think alike.

Description: In Gravyland, Parks chronicles the history of an urban university writing program and its attempt to develop politically progressive literacy partnerships with the surrounding community while having to work within and against a traditional educational and cultural landscape. He details the experience of Temple University’s New City Writing program from its beginning as a small institute with one program at a local public school to a multifaceted organization, supported by large multiyear grants and establishing partnerships across the diverse neighborhoods of Philadelphia. The author describes classrooms where the community takes a seat and becomes part of the conversation—a conversation that readers of Gravyland share through the inclusion of a selection of passages produced by community writers published by New City Community Press. While Parks celebrates classroom success in generating knowledge through dialogue with the larger community, he also highlights many of the obstacles the organizers of the New City Writing program faced. The author shows that writing alliances between universities and communities are possible, but they must take into account the institutional, economic, and political pressures that accompany such partnerships. Blending the theoretical and practical lessons learned, Parks elucidates New City Writing’s effort to offer a new model of education, one in which the voice of the professor must share space with the voices of the community, and one in which students come to understand that the right to sit in a classroom is the result not just of nationalist war but of peaceful civil disobedience, of community struggles to gain self-recognition, and of collective efforts to seek social justice.

Description: The classic novel of fly fishing and spirituality, originally published in 1983. Since its publication in 1983, THE RIVER WHY has become a classic. David James Duncan's sweeping novel is a coming-of-age comedy about love, nature, and the quest for self-discovery, written in a voice as distinct and powerful as any in American letters. Gus Orviston is a young fly fisherman who leaves behind his comically schizoid family to find his own path. Taking refuge in a remote cabin, he sets out in pursuit of the Pacific Northwest's elusive steelhead. But what begins as a physical quarry becomes a spiritual one as his quest for self-knowledge batters him with unforeseeable experiences. Profoundly reflective about our connection to nature and to one another, THE RIVER WHY is also a comedic rollercoaster. Like Gus, the reader emerges utterly changed, stripped bare by the journey Duncan so expertly navigates.

Description: John McPhee's twenty-sixth book is a braid of personal history, natural history, and American history, in descending order of volume. Each spring, American shad-Alosa sapidissima-leave the ocean in hundreds of thousands and run heroic distances upriver to spawn. McPhee--a shad fisherman himself--recounts the shad's cameo role in the lives of George Washington and Henry David Thoreau. He fishes with and visits the laboratories of famous ichthyologists; he takes instruction in the making of shad darts from a master of the art; and he cooks shad in a variety of ways, delectably explained at the end of the book. Mostly, though, he goes fishing for shad in various North American rivers, and he "fishes the same way he writes books, avidly and intensely. He wants to know everything about the fish he's after--its history, its habits, its place in the cosmos" (Bill Pride, The Denver Post). His adventures in pursuit of shad occasion the kind of writing--expert and ardent--at which he has no equal.

Description: "If you're a parent who has decided to educate your children yourself, this book is the first you should buy."—?Washington Times The Well-Trained Mind will instruct you, step by step, on how to give your child an academically rigorous, comprehensive education from preschool through high school—one that will train him or her to read, to think, to ?understand?, to be well-rounded and curious about learning. Veteran home educators Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer outline the classical pattern of education called the trivium, which organizes learning around the maturing capacity of the child's mind and comprises three stages: the elementary school "grammar stage," the middle school "logic stage," and the high school "rhetoric stage." Using this theory as your model, you'll be able to instruct your child in all levels of reading, writing, history, geography, mathematics, science, foreign languages, rhetoric, logic, art, and music, regardless of your own aptitude in those subjects. This newly revised edition contains completely updated ordering information for all curricula and books, new and expanded curricula recommendations, new material on using computers and distance-learning resources, answers to common questions about home education, information about educational support groups, and advice on practical matters such as working with your local school board, preparing a high school transcript, and applying to colleges.

Description: Theodor Seuss Geisel—known worldwide as the beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss—produced a body of work that spans more than 70 years. Though most often associated with children’s books, he frequently contributed cartoons and humorous essays to popular magazines, produced effective and memorable advertising campaigns (“Quick, Henry, the Flit!”), and won Oscars and Emmys for motion picture productions, animated shorts, and features. As founder and president of Beginner Books, his influence on children’s book publishing was revolutionary, especially in the field of elementary readers. Geisel’s prolific career—he wrote or contributed illustrations to more than 75 books, most of which have been reprinted repeatedly and translated worldwide—and his predilection for made-up creatures make this joint bibliography and iconography especially useful to readers and researchers. The exhaustive bibliography is arranged chronologically, providing full bibliographic information, including translations as they appear, reissue information, and descriptions of the binding. The iconography links more than 900 fictional names, places and terms to the works in which they appear. For the reader seeking a first edition of Quomodo Invidiosulus Nomine Grinchus Christi Natalem Abrogaverit (How the Grinch Stole Christmas! translated into Latin) or hoping to identify “abrasion-contusions” (race cars in If I Ran the Circus!), this work promises as much discovery as a walk down Mulberry Street.

Description: The definitive, fascinating, all-reaching biography of Dr. Seuss Dr. Seuss is a classic American icon. Whimsical and wonderful, his work has defined our childhoods and the childhoods of our own children. The silly, simple rhymes are a bottomless well of magic, his illustrations timeless favorites because, quite simply, he makes us laugh. The Grinch, the Cat in the Hat, Horton, and so many more, are his troupe of beloved, and uniquely Seussian, creations. Theodor Geisel, however, had a second, more radical side. It is there that the allure and fasciation of his Dr. Seuss alter ego begins. He had a successful career as an advertising man and then as a political cartoonist, his personal convictions appearing, not always subtly, throughout his books—remember the environmentalist of The Lorax? Geisel was a complicated man on an important mission. He introduced generations to the wonders of reading while teaching young people about empathy and how to treat others well. Agonizing over word choices and rhymes, touching up drawings sometimes for years, he upheld a rigorous standard of perfection for his work. Geisel took his responsibility as a writer for children seriously, talking down to no reader, no matter how small. And with classics like Green Eggs and Ham, and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Geisel delighted them while they learned. Suddenly, reading became fun. Coming right off the heels of George Lucas and bestselling Jim Henson, Brian Jay Jones is quickly developing a reputation as a master biographer of the creative geniuses of our time.

Description: Whoever wrote "Make 'em laugh!" knew that it's easier said than done. But people love to laugh, and good comedy will always sell. With the help of this complete and entertaining guide, writers and would-be writers for film and television can look forward to writing comedy that goes far beyond stereotypic jokes and characters. In Laughing Out Loud, award-winning screenwriter and author Andrew Horton blends history, theory, and analysis of comedy with invaluable advice. Using examples from Chaplin to Seinfeld, Aristophanes to Woody Allen, Horton describes comedy as a perspective rather than merely as a genre and then goes on to identify the essential elements of comedy. His lively overview of comedy's history traces its two main branches—anarchistic comedy and romantic comedy—from ancient Greece through contemporary Hollywood, by way of commedia dell'arte, vaudeville, and silent movies. Television and international cinema are included in Horton's analysis, which leads into an up-close review of the comedy chemistry in a number of specific films and television shows. The rest of the book is a practical guide to writing feature comedy and episodic TV comedy, complete with schedules and exercises designed to unblock any writer's comic potential. The appendices offer tips on networking, marketing, and even producing comedies, and are followed by a list of recommended comedies and a bibliography.

Description: Billy Malsavage, a young aide, is shocked at the scared look in twelve-year-old Ricky's eyes when the boy is wheeled into B Ward, victim of a serious brain injury suffered in a football game. Ricky can't walk or talk, but his intelligence is unaffected. Buddy also feels sorry for Ricky. A fifty-four-year-old man with cerebral palsy, he too is trapped in a body that doesn't work well, but his mind is fine. As the months pass, the three grow closer. Billy has his own inner demons, but does what he can to make Ricky feel better, less scared, among the residents of the ward, most of whom have severe or profound mental retardation. He reads to Ricky and Buddy and shows Laurel and Hardy movies. Buddy does what he can to befriend Ricky. As Ricky weakens and his physical condition worsens, he turns to his Catholic faith for solace. But can his faith help him in his desperation? Can anything? This is a novel about three isolated people who struggle to connect with others and to find some meaning, and maybe even salvation, in their lives. Billy, who has been working in B Ward for about a year, right after graduating from high school, is a reclusive loner who left home and his "whacko" parents as soon as he could. Buddy lived on the farm with his folks and then with just his brother and sister-in-law until they could no longer care for him and he had to be institutionalized. He hates enduring the indignities of being helpless, and longs for heaven. Ricky, until his terrible accident, was a normal kid living at home with his parents and sisters, playing sports and hanging out with his friends. At first, Ricky finds many of the residents bizarre or frightening. There's Gramps, the oldest person with Down syndrome in the state, and his twisted-up little friend Timmy, who spend most of each day holding hands. There's sullen Arnie, who always wears his stars and stripes hard hat and studies lingerie catalogs. There's annoying Larry the Whacker and little Davey, who scoots around the floor on his back and dusts the legs of cribs with a washcloth. But as time goes on, Ricky grows more used to them. When Ricky's condition takes a turn for the worse, Buddy and Billy feel helpless and worried. Will he get better? What if he doesn't? In his lonely hospital room, Ricky silently says his prayers and misses his friends. Now and at the Hour is Marty Drapkin's first published work of fiction. He's written and published nonfiction books and articles in his professional field, having to do with county jail operations. He is a self-described faceless bureaucrat laboring unappreciated for an obscure state government agency-the proverbial man in the gray flannel suit, leading a life of quiet desperation. Marty and his wife, Erica, live in Cross Plains, Wisconsin, with a motley crew of dogs and cats, all of whom have issues. He has a grown daughter who lives in Seattle and doesn't mind the rain. Description: This collection, ‘Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales’ contains eighteen of Hans Christian’s best-loved tales, and is illustrated by the charming plates and black and white line drawings of Anne Anderson. The stories include: ‘Little Ida's Flowers'; ‘The Red Shoes'; ‘The Snow Queen'; ‘The Emperor's New Clothes'; ‘The Constant Tin Soldier'; ‘The Flying Trunk'; ‘The Wild Swans'; ‘The Real Princess'; ‘Elfin Mount'; ‘The Storks'; and ‘The Darning Needle’. Hans Christian Andersen (1805 – 1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children’s stories but perhaps best known for his fables and fairy tales – meant for both adults and children. They were frequently written in a colloquial style, using idioms and spoke language in a manner previously unseen in Danish literature. Though simple at first glance, Hans Andersen’s fairy tales often convey sophisticated moral teachings, in equal measure heart-breaking and heart-warming. Anne Anderson (1874 – 1930) was a prolific Scottish illustrator, primarily known for her art nouveaux children’s book illustrations. She also painted, etched and designed many greetings cards, with her illustrations appearing near the end of the Edwardian era. Presented alongside the text, her illustrations further refine and elucidate Andersen’s masterful storytelling. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.
